there should really be a help/tutorial/explanation screen. i have no idea how set bonuses work, or how much damage is given by level 1 vs level 4 gems.

this is a very good idea, we should have the opportunity to cancel a match before we make any moves without a penalty. This way if we are clearly going to lose against someone 6000 hp higher than us, we dont get booted to a lower league. This could still cause problems like farming low hp players that just entered the league but i would prefer this to the cruel matchmaking rng that is currently implemented.
